Dr Garrett is making it too easy for himself. Human nature and motivations are incredibly complex. A physician has to look at each person as a person, and is unfit to serve the public if he or she is not already thoroughly familiar with the human feelings expressed in Mary Gohlke's autobiography. The many and complex psychiatric aspects of organ transplantation are more accurately and comprehensively covered elsewhere.1-3 I remain convinced that a physician's limited time is best spent trying to understand the thoughts and feelings of the individual patients under their care.
