To the Editor.—
In the article entitled "The Opportunity and Obligation to Eliminate Rubella From the United States," Orenstein et al1 advise physicians "to vaccinate susceptible adults especially women of childbearing age when they bring in their infants and children for routine well-baby care and immunizations."
Since April, I have tried to find mothers who may be in need of rubella vaccine and have been unsuccessful. Mothers vaguely recall blood having been drawn by the delivering physician, but few recall the exact status of their rubella immunity. Furthermore, discussion about future or actual hysterectomy, tubal ligation, vasectomy, and pregnancy ensues and brings up interesting possibilities, but does not help in determining rubella immunity. In short, this specific approach suggested by Orenstein et al has been neither practical nor useful.
