HTLV-III/LAV Antibodies in Contacts of Hemophiliacs

To the Editor.—

Jason et al1 state that household contacts of hemophiliacs with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)/AIDS-related complex (ARC) or who test positive for human T-cell lymphotropic virus type III/ lymphadenopathy-associated virus (HTLV-III/LAV) antibody had significantly lower numbers of total lymphocytes, T-helper lymphocytes, and T-suppressor lymphocytes when compared with household contacts of hemophiliacs with negative test results for HTLV-III/LAV antibody. The authors fail, however, to provide information as to whether the individual household contacts with lower lymphocyte numbers (AIDS/ARC households and households of hemophilia A participants who were HTLV-III/LAV antibody positive) were also sexual or nonsexual contacts of the hemophiliac patients. Such information would be useful in attempting to understand the statistically significant difference presented in this report. Would the authors provide these basic data? . . .
