Drs Dassey, Klein, and Kanter raise points in their letters that require response. Dr Dassey raises the point that AIDS is a syndrome and not a single disease. The Council on Scientific Affairs is well aware of this and described the syndrome in its initial publication on AIDS.1 Since that publication, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has revised its original case definition of AIDS to include other diseases, if there is a positive serologic or virologic test result for HTLV-III.2 Other disease states also have since been reported in the literature as associated with HTLV-III infection.3-6 The incubation period for the manifestation of these latter diseases varies, as one might expect, but they have not been included in the CDC definition of AIDS.
