To the Editor.—
I read with interest the recent article on the mitral valve prolapse syndrome.1 One aspect of the syndrome that was not addressed was the use of antiplatelet therapy in patients using the birth control pill. The transient ischemic attacks that I have seen in patients without other forms of organic heart disease have been associated with mitral valve prolapses. In view of this I have recommended antiplatelet therapy in any women using oral contraceptive agents. Since my practice is devoted primarily to cardiology, I am undoubtedly seeing a biased population. However, the unresolved questions are these: should the patients who are being seen by our gynecologic colleagues and beginning use of oral contraceptive agents be screened for mitral valve prolapses, and, if they are found, should they then begin using antiplatelet agents?
