To the Editor.—

In the May 24/31, 1985, issue of JAMA there is a LANDMARK ARTICLE by Drs Wynder and Graham¹ with comment by Dr Jesse L. Steinfeld.² Dr Wynder was a student at Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis and Dr Graham a world-famous professor of surgery at the same institution. Smoking histories were obtained from 605 men with an established diagnosis of lung cancer in a number of hospitals throughout the United States, and these were compared with histories of 780 men in the general population with similar age and economic distribution. They found strong but not conclusive evidence of the relationship of lung cancer to cigarette smoking.
