In Reply.—
The major point that Burch and Chesters are concerned about is the inconsistency of our results with those of Donovan. It is a concern that we have pondered ourselves. We have discussed with Donovan, both during and after our study, known and possible differences in the women or elements of the trial. We addressed these issues in the original article.1 An additional point that might be considered is possible differences in quit rates between the two trials. Although the number of cigarettes smoked at the end of pregnancy seem to be comparable in the two trials, Donovan did not report quit rates. If the women reduced their smoking, as they reported, but did so by cutting down the number of cigarettes instead of quitting altogether, the children might not have realized a benefit.
