This is the 86th EDUCATION ISSUE of THE JOURNAL. The first report on medical education in the United States was published in the Sept 21, 1901, issue of JAMA.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 1986 Education Issue Editorial
Dr Richard L. Egan's editorial identifies several factors in the environment of US medical education that threaten the current system. He argues that any changes in the locale and/or method of educating future physicians must take into account the patient as an essential resource for the educational program.
Special Studies
A special study on foreign medical school graduates (FMGs) reveals details on the location of programs and institutions training FMGs. The programs with FMG residents were concentrated in seven states and Puerto Rico and had 35% of all residents but 64% of all FMG residents. The Middle Atlantic region, which includes New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, had 24% of all residents but 47%
