To the Editor.—

I have read with considerable interest the letters in your July 25 issue on the statement of the Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs entitled "Withholding or Withdrawing Life-Prolonging Medical Treatment."¹I am the Corbett who initiated the Corbett case in Florida, which resulted in an appellate court decision legalizing the Council's statement in Florida. I, too, attended the New Orleans meeting where the statement was presented. For some years, I have been a member of the Hastings Center and the American Society of Law and Medicine. My wife of 48 years was in a permanent vegetative state for nearly three years. I am appalled at the misconceptions I find rampant on this issue involving law, medicine, and ethics.
