The Iron Lung at Rancho Los Amigos

To the Editor.—

Our professional staff enjoyed the LANDMARK ARTICLE and the LANDMARK PERSPECTIVE on the iron lung published in the March 21 issue.1,2 We were also excited to see Fig 3 on page 1479 because that picture hangs in several different areas of our hospital: Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center in Downey, Calif, a Los Angeles suburb. Rancho takes great pride in its heritage as one of the early respiratory centers for patients afflicted with polio, and the picture is incorrectly identified as having been taken at Los Angeles County Hospital. It was really taken at a special gathering, attended by Hollywood celebrities, in our auditorium for all of our polio patients in Drinker tanks and on rocking beds (upper right and left hand corners).
