To the Editor.—
Lane et al1 have demonstrated a higher mineral content of lumbar vertebral trabecular bone in runners. Their data, however, should be interpreted with caution until the smoking habits of their control subjects are known. Cigarette smoking is well established as a risk factor for the development of osteoporosis.2-6 Since habitual runners are almost exclusively nonsmokers, any satisfactory control population should demonstrate comparable tobacco abstinence.
