Reye's Syndrome and Salicylates

To the Editor.—

Dr Mortimer's1 editorial in the April 10 issue of JAMA on salicylates and Reye's syndrome implied that the American Academy of Pediatrics acquiesced to delay in the warning about the possible connection of Reye's syndrome to aspirin because of pressure from the aspirin drug manufacturers.

A drug company did try to pressure the academy, but their lobbying was not even considered in the academy's action on the issue. I was president of the academy at the time and we agreed with the editors of Pediatrics to carry a special report from our Committee on Infectious Diseases warning about the possible association while, at the same time, carrying an article from the Louisiana State University Medical Center questioning the association.

At that time, there were many differences of opinion among scientific experts, untainted by the drug company, about the reliability of the existing statistical studies. The academy . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
