In Reply.—
While the Council does not directly address the issue of AIDS, or for that matter other specific disease systems, in its environmental analysis of the pediatric specialty, the report highlights the rise in a "new morbidity" associated with changes in family structures and the social environment that have resulted in an increased awareness of the needs of children and adolescents for behavioral counseling and sex education. Pediatric practice associated with the rise in the new morbidities and adolescent medicine clearly should include appropriate educational efforts to reduce the spread of AIDS.
