THE AMERICAN FERTILITY Society is recommending that physicians no longer use fresh semen for artificial insemination (JAMA 1987;258:2025). The change in policy arises from concern about the potential for unwittingly transmitting human immunodeficiency virus (JAMA 1988;259:1301).
The society now recommends that all specimens be frozen and quarantined for 180 days. At the end of that period, the donor should be retested and confirmed as seronegative. The complete revised guidelines appear in the February issue of Fertility and Sterility.
