THE AMERICAN FERTILITY Society is recommending that physicians no longer use fresh semen for artificial insemination (JAMA 1987;258:2025). The change in policy arises from concern about the potential for unwittingly transmitting human immunodeficiency virus (JAMA 1988;259:1301).

The society now recommends that all specimens be frozen and quarantined for 180 days. At the end of that period, the donor should be retested and confirmed as seronegative.
