In Reply.
—The letter by Drs Stampfer and Colditz points out the very problem that originally sparked the article: the difficulty in correctly interpreting the results of ongoing epidemiologic studies. If you read the article carefully, you will note in the lead paragraph that I state that "reports in the lay press" suggested that the Harvard study questioned the benefits of estrogen. Since our readers presumably read newspapers, we felt it important to explain the seeming discrepancy. This was the reason why I interviewed Dr Colditz, who did a fine job of explaining what their study did and did not say about estrogens, menopause, and cardiovascular risk. In fact, the final paragraph emphasizes the benefits of estrogen replacement therapy in postmenopausal
