To the Editor.
—I am questioning some of the methods and conclusions in the article by Cleary et al.1
Although there are no studies, to my knowledge, documenting the prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus infection among those planning marriage, the prevalence estimates that the authors use in their calculations, while not necessarily wrong, are clearly low. Their prevalence data assume a rate of infection of 70 per 100 000 among men aged 18 to 44 years and seven per 100 000 among others. This assumption would yield fewer than 200 000 infected individuals in the country's overall population, which is in contrast to a study quoted by the authors that estimated a yield of 1 to 2 million infected individuals.2 The "worst-case" situation that the authors construct uses a prevalence rate only twice as high as the original assumption.
