—After nine issues, starting in 1978, CONTEMPO has evidently become a tradition for our readers. Responding to queries about specialties that were not represented has become a tradition for the editor.

The purpose of CONTEMPO is to provide an overview of advances in various medical specialties. It would be impossible to include every specialty every year. Failure to include a specialty does not suggest that that specialty is less important or has had fewer significant advances in the last year than others.

The facts of life are that pages are limited. As the EDITORIAL1 in the 1987 issue notes, "Because of space limitations, not all areas of medicine can be included each year; those that cannot will be rotated on a two- to five-year cycle."
