To the Editor.—
On what data does Dr Chodak1 base his statement that "the most recent assessment indicates that surgically implanted radioactive seeds have not been a sufficiently effective treatment for localized prostate cancer"?
Schellhammer and associates2 reported similar percentages of negative biopsy findings with either open implantation of iodine 125 (65%) or external beam radiation therapy (71%) for treatment of prostate cancer.
Further, Dr Chodak, grouping together various surgical approaches, declares iodine 125 implantation experimental despite the fact that there is a history of success with open surgery, which was originally developed because of the anatomic limitation of the perineal approach.3
