CHAIRPERSON'S COLUMN
As the months in medical school pass by and we get caught up in our studies, we wonder if someday we might be able to make a special contribution to medicine or public health. Such public service is readily available through participation in the AIDS adolescent education project of the AMA-Medical Student Section.
In March 1988, 160 students representing 116 medical schools attended a training conference to learn how to carry out an AIDS education project targeted towards adolescents in their communities. Now, nine months later, we can see that this program has been successful. Coordinators of the AIDS project have collectively initiated thousands of community contacts and made hundreds of presentations to adolescents nationwide. Because we are close in age to adolescents and can share with them a unique perspective, medical students are most effective in making these presentations and delivering meaningful information about preventing HIV
