Dr Komrad's concerns regarding the handling of mental and nervous disorders by the insurance industry are very legitimate. The insurance industry can be accused in many instances of being insensitive and extraordinarily cautious on the issue of mental and nervous disorders. However, prudent underwriting practices are essential to the financial viability of the insurer and ultimately the offered program, whether on an individual or group basis.

The American Medical Association (AMA) and its newly formed subsidiary, AMA Insurance Agency, Inc, are concerned with underwriting and coverage issues associated with mental and nervous disorders. For over 20 years, the AMA has sponsored various high-quality, competitively priced insurance plans, designed to fit the personal and business needs of its member physicians. Included within every health and disability plan sponsored by the AMA is coverage for mental and nervous conditions.
