To the Editor. —
We read the article by Garry et al1 that presented evidence for an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) virus infection in the United States in 1968 with mixed feelings of satisfaction and disappointment. We were satisfied to find in this report further support to our belief that "AIDS is an old disease that has been unrecognized in the past because of its sporadic occurrence."2 However, we were disappointed by the failure to cite our article entitled "AIDS in the Pre-AIDS Era,"2 in which we reviewed the medical literature since 1950 for unrecognized cases of probable AIDS that had occurred before the start of the current epidemic. We disclosed 19 such cases, one of which was the patient described by Garry et al and previously reported by Elvin-Lewis et al3 and Witte et al.4
