We agree with Drs Franklin and Rackow that access to ICU care before and after the introduction of the Prospective Payment System and outcomes of "ward" patients must also be evaluated. A clinically based national study that is designed to accomplish that purpose is nearing completion.¹ We agree that the results of our study should be cautiously interpreted until additional data are available.
