We agree with Drs Franklin and Rackow that access to ICU care before and after the introduction of the Prospective Payment System and outcomes of "ward" patients must also be evaluated. A clinically based national study that is designed to accomplish that purpose is nearing completion.1 We agree that the results of our study should be cautiously interpreted until additional data are available.
