To the Editor.—
We read the article by Cummins et al1 with interest. For the last 5 years, we have worked in one of the three suburban hospitals—Northeast Community Hospital—that receive patients from Dallas/Ft Worth Airport, a hub for both American Airlines and Delta Airlines. Based on intuitive impressions, we felt the number of travel-related deaths to be underestimated worldwide. We therefore reviewed our charts of patients brought in by ambulance from the airport.
Study.—
Of 366 admissions from the airport in 1987, two hundred sixty-one were travelers and 105 were residents. In the group of travelers, there were 11 cardiac arrests, 52 admissions to the intensive care unit, and one patient who left the hospital against medical advice, having sustained a documented myocardial infarction.
