To the Editor.—
In reading the article entitled "Suicide Mortality in the Maryland State Prison System, 1979 Through 1987," by Salive et al,1 I was surprised to discover that the characteristics of inmates who committed suicide did not address the major issue of whether any of them had been subject to homosexual rape. All of the features characteristic of heterosexual rape, which is justly condemned, apply to homosexual rape, with the addition that in the prison environment the man who is raped by homosexual attack has no way to escape further rapes by the same gang. This must have an influence on the incidence of suicide; it is unfortunate that the study was done without addressing this major issue.
