In Reply. —
I too would expect my physician to prescribe my medications based solely on what he or she felt was best for me. However, detail men often select out data to present to physicians that support the argument that their product is superior. Furthermore, if the pharmaceutical company provides an incentive (economic or otherwise) to use its product, a physician's decision process may be influenced.
I agree with Mr Hall's comments that medical schools and residency programs should train physicians to evaluate pharmaceutical products critically. This was the primary motivation behind the development of our recent seminar that dealt with interactions.
