To The Editor. —
The article by Manning et al1 did not consider the external costs incurred when a pregnant woman smokes. I believe the sampling techniques of the authors would not have included the expenses incurred in the care of premature infants. I suspect the cost of neonatal intensive care and the future extra educational and medical costs would make "the taxes of sin" paid by smokers inadequate.
