To the Editor.—

The article by Drs Kashkin and Kleber¹ focuses on the addictive properties of anabolic androgenic steroids. They stress that athletes who use these drugs need to be treated rather than tested and penalized.

We have been involved with delivering lectures on anabolic steroids to various groups. Attendance varied and our message seemed, at best, poorly received. We then cared for a young, previously healthy patient who had a stroke as a result of steroid use,² after which we decided to begin a steroid clinic where we could see athletes who were using or were thinking of using steroids. This is done on a one-to-one basis—completely confidentially and without cost.³ We think this enables the athlete to assess his or her own risks and perceived benefits based on history and results of physical examination and laboratory tests (Table).
