To the Editor.—
I was most encouraged to read the editorial by Dr Hilfiker1, who makes the point that the poor and homeless must be cared for if we really are to consider America a great society. He also ties the political power of physicians to the need to solve the problems of lack of housing and lack of access to primary health care and treatment programs.
I agree with Dr Hilfiker wholeheartedly. He is correct in identifying both the issue and the solutions. However, I must differ with him in one area. Who are the homeless? One gets the impression reading the editorial that homelessness only affects poor, uneducated people, those living on the margin of society. For the most part this is true.
