To the Editor. —

Recently, the advisability of the continued promotion of major athletic events by cigarette manufacturers has been challenged as inappropriate. It has been decades since cigarette advertising graced the pages of medical journals. It seems equally incongruous that JAMA, the leading medical authority calling for the abolition of boxing,1-3 should month after month allow a major pharmaceutical company (Pfizer) to promote their latest cephalosporin (Cefobid) as the "infection fighter" that "defeats nosocomial pneumonia" and "knocks out infections," usually illustrated with a boxer's hands raised in victory, a set of boxing gloves, or a pair of boxing trunks (JAMA. 1988;259:2603, 1989;261:2259, 1989;262:600,1989;262:1146). . . .
