In Reply.—
I regret any unconscious, homophobic, or racist inferences in my review of Michael Fumento's book The Myth of Heterosexual AIDS. Human immunodeficiency virus has no sexual or skin color preference. The acquired immunodeficiency scourge affects all of us. Unfortunately, the underclass, already burdened by poverty, homelessness, and limited education and communication skills, in addition to inadequate access to health care, now must prepare to bear the brunt of human immunodeficiency virus infection.
Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome will bring death and destruction to neighborhoods and families. Crack houses have replaced gay bathhouses as havens of sexual promiscuity and human immunodeficiency virus infection. Many unsuspecting and loving women are infected and infect their infants. Others are date raped. Denial, isolation, and a male-dominated sexual value system make women vulnerable. The intense campaigns for safe sex that protected the gay community from new infection are lost on the impoverished and addicted. Public
