Portable Cholesterol Analyzers

To the Editor.—

Kaufman et al1 reported the coefficient of variation of cholesterol on the Reflotron analyzers as being 13.3%. These results differ from those reported in the literature, including references cited by the authors of the JAMA study. The tabulation below presents the results of eight other studies compared with the study of Kaufman et al. The coefficients of variation varied between 1.1% and 5.7% in these studies vs 13.3% in that by Kaufman et al.

Formula

We do not know why the results of Kaufman et al differ so dramatically from those in the other reports. It is possible that their study protocol may have differed from that recommended by the manufacturers. We have requested a copy of the protocol so that we can validate the results internally.
