To the Editor. —

I care for women at public health department family planning and cancer screening clinics. "Screening Mammography: A Missed Clinical Opportunity?"¹ explored the reasons why screening mammography has been underutilized among less educated and poorer women. My experience has been at variance with the statement that "few cited cost or radiation as reasons for not obtaining a mammogram."

Most of my patients want the recommended mammography, but the majority explain that they are unable to do so because they cannot afford it. For these women of "the working poor," any health problem in their family represents a potential financial disaster. For most, a screening mammogram would be an unthinkable luxury. . . .
