In Reply.—
Dr Gilchrist has proposed a number of concerns that, I believe, should be addressed in order.
He makes the blanket statement to the effect that the editorial attempted to justify the use of bST in the American dairy industry. This is not the case except as it relates to the human health issue and milk safety. The editorial was written expressly to sort out and place in perspective for the general public the conflicting and erroneous information clouding this whole area.
If bST increases the rate of small farm failure, this would be a very unfortunate aspect of its use. However, it is not clear at this time what the economic impact will actually be, given the fact that the dairy industry was in grave trouble long before bST was in evidence. While bST may not benefit the small farmer, who may unfortunately already be on a downward
