To the Editor.—
The January 9, 1991, issue of JAMA contains several articles relating to health care among "Hispanics."
I would like the authors to define what they mean by Hispanics. "Hispanic" is neither a race nor a definite group of people. The word Hispanic presumably refers to Spain, although the articles deal with Latin American immigrants.
I have a very difficult time understanding who a Hispanic is supposed to be and why these people are grouped together. I see no similarity whatsoever from the racial, biological, cultural, or linguistic point of view among these populations. I am well aware of the fact that Hispanic is a word found in many application forms, statistical analyses, etc, but I was never able to understand what this means. I would like to ask the authors of these articles to explain the similarities between an Argentinian of Italian descent, a Bolivian of Indian
