To the Editor.—

Dr Goodwin's "Mercy" article1 deals with something I face daily. My 23-year-old son has been in a "locked-in" state for 5 years now. He seems to see and hear at times or to be happy or sad. He has a yes-no signal that at times seems to function. Who really knows? I am sure my bright, handsome son, when he was all that, would never want to be kept alive and be cared for totally as we are presently doing. But what I don't know and what Dr Goodwin's article brought home to me is what he would want in his present situation. I wish I knew, but I have a feeling I never will. Our only plans are to continue to love him, care for him, and pray for us all. This "horse" won't be shot. . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
