Caring for the Underserved

The May 15 issue of Jama will address the problem of health care access for millions of uninsured and underinsured Americans. This issue of Pulse similarly considers the subject of caring for the underserved. Several articles focus on the health care of Native Americans, another on the revival of the National Health Service Corps, a federal program that funds medical students' education in exchange for their service as physicians in underserved areas. A directory, the third in an ongoing series, lists opportunities for students to work in underserved areas.

Aiding the underserved need not be reserved for students' summer vacations or fourth-year electives. Extracurricular volunteerism can be a rewarding part of medical education. Across the country students address community-specific needs by serving meals at homeless shelters, by teaching high school students about smoking hazards, drug abuse, or sexually transmitted disease, by performing physical examinations . . .
