To the Editor.—

I read with considerable interest the article by Gellhorn.¹

The concepts and data presented certainly stimulate thought and discussion. I would, however, like to point out certain inaccuracies relating to the Ontario experience. The Peer Assessment Program referred to in the article was envisaged, developed, and is operated not by the Ontario Medical Association but by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. The medical profession, which numbers approximately 26 000 in Ontario, is licensed and self-governed by the college. The program has indeed been operating for a decade, but during that time, contrary to what is stated in the article, the practices of approximately 2600 physicians of all age groups have been assessed. This figure includes family physicians and specialists from 13 major disciplines.
