To the Editor.—
My first response to Dr Soloway's1 Commentary was that this was some sort of medical spoof. This form of medical practice gives a new meaning to the term catastrophic care!
Dr Soloway tells us about the proposed regulations whereby Medicare or Medicaid recipients could order tests on themselves as long as the expense is not billed to Medicare or Medicaid. But think of the expense involved in following up on the results of these tests. This will certainly be billed to Medicare, Medicaid, and everyone else. Rather than "applauding the inevitable," physicians should clench both fists and fight this folly.
