—I appreciate the interest in my article expressed by Drs Morfesis and Manthous. I attempted to make the point that it is neither medically necessary nor economically realistic to believe that medical coverage to the uninsured and underinsured of this country can be extended based on a further increase in overall national health care expenditures. It is quite apparent that Morfesis does not agree with many of my comments when he suggests that they are typical of the thinking that has led to the present-day crisis. I would argue otherwise since I do not believe that society sees good medical care as a "privilege" but as a "right." I can also not accept the notion that the quality of medical care should vary between individuals of different means and hope that this is not what he considers as the "inflexibility" of the system.
