—I agree with Dr and Ms Record concerning the important role that public screening programs can play in educating the public concerning high blood cholesterol values. The important work of the Records in community-based control programs for high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol in Maine is well recognized in New England. The results reported in their letter provide further evidence of their good work.

Blood pressure screening programs conducted throughout the United States in the 1970s and 1980s were a major contributing force to the improved awareness and control of high blood pressure that occurred during that period. The attendant reductions in morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular diseases indicate the enormous potential of such programs.

I hope cholesterol screening programs will make similar contributions. They are, however, far more complex undertakings than blood pressure screenings because of the greater difficulty in producing accurate and precise results and . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
