Reducing Youth Access to Tobacco

To continue its longstanding commitment that smoking is not for young people, the tobacco industry... is supporting state legislation to make it tougher for young people to buy cigarettes. We are also working with retailers for strict compliance with state laws prohibiting sales of cigarettes to minors.—The Tobacco Institute, 1991 poster.

[W]e believe that tobacco distributors can play an important role in reinforcing retailer efforts to comply with state laws prohibiting tobacco sales to minors. Indeed, NATD currently is preparing a program to assist retailers in this regard. Peter Strauss, president and chief executive officer, National Association of Tobacco Distributors.1
