In Reply.
—I wish to offer my gratitude to Dr Garbitelli for two things. First, he took the time to carefully read my 21st-century version of the Hippocratic oath, and second, he was kind enough to write a letter about the oath, giving me the opportunity to respond.
After reading his letter three times, I have come to the conclusion that he does not espouse the ideas that I was trying to present in my oath. In the next century, I believe physicians will become more concerned about the importance of dignity for the dying patient and more accepting of the fact that death is an important part of the total process of living. Society will not allow physicians to continue practicing the maintenance of life at all ages and at all costs. Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote in 1844 that "knowledge by suffering entereth, And life is perfected by death."
