To the Editor.
—I feel compelled to respond to three paragraphs on page 1749 in the Maharishi Ayur-Veda story1 inaccurately portraying my work. First, on page 1749, the article says that in a meeting of transcendental meditation (TM) representatives with Arizona Department of Corrections (ADC) officials, "it was made clear the Arizona Department of Corrections was not interested in their proposal." This was not the case. The then commissioner expressed a clear interest in this proposal and indeed discussed using TM with a particular group of intractable, violent offenders detained in a special high-security facility. He asked us to submit a further proposal specifically targeted for that group.
Second, the article reports that I said TM was the "only" effective way of rehabilitating prisoners. Although I did say that TM was distinctively effective in prison rehabilitation, I did not say it was the only way. Indeed, I suggested it
