To the Editor.
—The article entitled "A Critical Analysis of the Resource-Based Relative Value Scale"1 is timely and provocative. Few health care providers would argue that some physicians work longer hours than others. Can we feel comfortable in accepting the assumptions that Dr Maloney uses to calculate his fee-per-hour data? Are the conclusions valid?
Maloney calculates a "nominal work hour" value that handsomely rewards those specialties with weekly working hours greater than 48. His calculation, in simplest terms, multiplies
