To the Editor.
—Washington et al1 have some good suggestions on preventing pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), yet under the category of "general preventive measures" they include several ways to somewhat decrease PID under "maintain healthy sexual behavior," but omit the single healthy sexual behavior that will virtually eliminate PID: limit sexual intercourse to a mutually monogamous relationship. This is the only sexual behavior guaranteed to prevent PID and other sexually transmitted diseases. It should be the goal that we advocate to our patients, with the measures listed by Washington et al being recommended as the next most useful methods that decrease but do not eliminate risk, for those who do not meet the primary goal.
