—Dr Karr asks an important question regarding weight gain and smoking cessation. In our study, the successful abstainers gained more weight than nonquitters (P<.001). However, no differences in weight gain were found among the treatment regimens. Average weight gain for the nicotine and placebotreatments, respectively, was 2.1 kg and 2.6 kg at 6 weeks and 3.6 kg and 3.9 kg at 12 weeks. Thus, our evidence suggests that transdermal nicotine therapy does not prevent weight gain.
Dr Rennard and Mr Daughton have received research grants and fees from Marion Merrell Dow, Inc, Cincinnati, Ohio, for consultancies and honoraria for educational activities.
