—We appreciate Dr Brumback's comments; they offer a valuable historical perspective to the issues surrounding dietary fiber in our culture. We are in full agreement that public education in this area needs to begin anew and would like to add that research also must continue to elucidate mechanisms of action and to shed more light on individual and subgroup responsiveness.
