In Reply.
—I agree with the NRA when it says "Guns don't kill people; people kill people." That is why the major thrust of our proposals dealt with gun owners and users and not guns themselves.
Responses to our publications about violence in the 10 journals of the AMA in June 1992 was swift and enormous. Major international public media attention (print and electronic) continues, especially in magazines and columns. Government leaders, member physicians, newspaper editors, students, and the public at large (including many gun owners) were highly supportive. The AMA authorized the compilation of all articles into one 434-page book called Violence,1 now available for sale from our Chicago office by calling (800) 621-8335.
By no means, however, did everyone we heard from support the recommendations of the Editorial, as evidenced by some of these accompanying letters.
