To the Editor.

—The North Carolina Pediatric Society has worked for years to improve access to health care for children. We encouraged pediatricians to participate in the survey reported in "Factors Associated With Pediatricians' Participation in Medicaid in North Carolina."¹ Some of the study results, however, seem inconsistent with our experience of the access problem for Medicaid children. For years we have felt that a majority of the primary care physicians restricted open access to children covered by Medicaid. Therefore, we were puzzled when the results of this survey indicated only 29% of pediatricians restricted access. If that were true, then there should be enough providers available for this population. Since we are convinced that more providers are needed, we have made efforts to determine the significant factors necessary to attract them.
