—Dr Brown charges that my review carries a proselytizing tone, that I do not review the current literature on the relationship between diet and cancer, and that I do not comment on the "proposed long-term effects of our contemporary sodium-rich, potassium-poor diet on cellular function." He states that I should have discussed the role of the colon in excretory physiology.

My review is a critique of the "science" Gerson and his proponents cite to explain the mechanisms of disease and its cure. The potential benefit of dietary fruits and vegetables that Brown alludes to relates primarily to the prevention of cancer. Since Gerson's diet is used in the treatment of existing cancer, a review of the literature on influence of diet in prevention was not called for.
